2026 Gerald Soane Award

The Gerald Soane Award is awarded annually by the Solvents Industry Association in recognition of an individual’s outstanding contribution to the work of the SIA’s Technical Committee, in improving Health & Safety. It is named after a former Chair of the SIA.

This recipient of the Gerald Soane Award is selected by the SIA Chief Executive and approved by the board. This year, the trophy was presented at the SIA dinner by the 2025 winner and former SIA Chief Executive, Andrew Norman, who explained the background to this award.

“It was back in 2019 when I first approached the company that this person works for, as I felt that their activities epitomised the SIA’s philosophy of safe working. It was the first company where I had to visit their premises and present the merits of SIA membership. I produced a presentation to several members of the team.

“Shortly afterwards they joined the SIA. Ever since, the company and the individual have embraced the work of the Association and have been very active on the Technical Committee. Particularly so this year, where they have been heavily involved in the production of the re-worked Solvents and IBCs safety film.

“It is an absolute pleasure to present the Gerald Soane Award to them; their work is vital in spreading the word about safe working with IBCs and to ensure that those handling solvents don’t supply them in paper bags! This year’s winner is not only a worthy recipient but also a really decent bloke.

“The winner of the 2026 Award is James Astley of PH Europe!”

James later responded “I’m truly honoured and grateful to have received the SIA Gerald Soane Award for Health & Safety. To be recognised by an industry and community of people that I have so much respect for, genuinely means a great deal to me.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of my role at PH Europe is the opportunity to make a positive difference, promoting the safer handling, storage, and distribution of flammable solvents. Contributing to the SIA’s Technical Committee to help promote best practices across our industry makes my work all the more meaningful.

“My heartfelt thanks to the SIA, its members and everyone who shares this commitment. I feel incredibly proud and privileged to have received this recognition!”

I am sure that you will join Andrew, Bill and all at the SIA in congratulating James on his well-deserved award!
