Hydrocarbon Solvents

As the name suggests, hydrocarbon solvents contain only carbon and hydrogen atoms within their structure.
There are hundreds of different types of hydrocarbons and are extracted from crude oil in the refining process.

Hydrocarbons are not miscible with water so are of particular use when dissolving or extracting non-polar materials. Hydrocarbons are used in surface coatings, cleaning products, polishes, pharmaceutical manufacture

Hydrocarbons that are used industrially can be supplied in a number of different forms:
Aliphatic hydrocarbons (Normal, Iso, Cyclic)
Aromatic Hydrocarbons (Structure contains an aromatic ring)
Dearomatised grades (A distillation fraction collected over a temperature range where aromatics have been removed)
